The IIS URL Rewrite Module is a rules-based rewrite engine that can be used to manipulate the way URLs appear on a browser and/or redirect URLs to a new location on your website. Simply put, when a visitor enters a particular URL, the rewrite engine analyzes the request and modifies it to another URL on the same site.
Please note that the IIS URL Rewrite Module is a feature available only on Windows 2008 and Windows 2012 shared hosting plans. If you are on a Windows 2003 server, you can create URL rewrites with the Micronovae IIS Mod-Rewrite module.
